In 2004, the FDA announced a warning against the use of certain antidepressants in the late third trimester. The warning stated that physicians may want to gradually taper pregnant women off antidepressant drugs in the third trimester so that the baby is not affected. After a woman delivers, she should consult with her doctor to decide whether to return to a full dose during the period when she is most vulnerable to postpartum depression.
In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert regarding the increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth. The alert covered Paxil along with other antidepressant drugs including Zoloft and Prozac. The label was also changed adding stronger warnings regarding a study suggesting that exposure to the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy may be linked with an increased risk of a birth defect involving cardiac problems. Paxil side effects continue to be studied and analyzed.
